The Buckley-Chomsky Debate Transcript
This website exists purely to make available a transcript of the fascinating debate between William F Buckley and Noam Chomsky, which took place in New York City on April 3, 1969. The exchange was televised under the title "Vietnam and the Intellectuals", as part of Buckley's series, Firing Line.
The debate can be freely viewed on sites such as YouTube, and there are various edits in existence. This transcript is based on the most complete video recording we have found, which can be seen at:
In typing out the commentary, I have occasionally tidied up grammatical errors or instances where a speaker begins a sentence then quickly changes tack. Where one speaker interrupts the other, this is indicated by ellipsis at the end of the interrupted person’s words.
